The fortress stands on a high rocky ridge above the Asenitsa River, about 2.5 km south of Asenovgrad. Historically also called Petrich Fortress, the site developed from an earlier fortified position and was expanded under Bulgarian tsar Ivan Asen II. A rock inscription commissioned by Ivan Asen II in 1231 records work at the fortress. The best-preserved building is the medieval Church of the Holy Mother of God of Petrich, distinguished by its two-level construction and surviving wall paintings. The ridge setting involves steep, uneven ground, stone steps and exposed edges; sturdy footwear is advisable.
