A group of reddish sandstone and conglomerate formations extending around Belogradchik in the western Balkan Mountains. Erosion along joints and weaker rock layers created towers, pinnacles, cliffs and forms traditionally given names based on people, animals and buildings. Bulgaria submitted the Rocks of Belogradchik to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2011 under natural criteria (vii) and (viii); this is tentative status, not World Heritage inscription. The rock landscape and Belogradchik Fortress form a closely connected natural and historic ensemble. Viewing areas include uneven rock, steps, exposed edges and limited shade; use sturdy footwear and supervise children closely.
