The Hellenistic tholos tomb dates to around the end of the 4th century BCE and was discovered in 1944. It lies near Seuthopolis, the capital associated with the Thracian ruler Seuthes III, within a large Thracian necropolis. Its narrow corridor and circular burial chamber preserve exceptional murals depicting Thracian funerary rites and culture. UNESCO inscribed the tomb on the World Heritage List in 1979 under criteria (i), (iii) and (iv). The original tomb is exceptionally fragile and subject to strict conservation controls; ordinary visitor access should not be assumed.
