The historic core preserves successive layers from Thracian, Hellenistic, Roman, medieval, Ottoman and Bulgarian National Revival periods. Nebet Tepe contains some of the earliest settlement evidence in the city; UNESCO's Tentative List description dates human presence there to the end of the third millennium BCE. Major landmarks in and around the reserve include the Roman Theatre, remains of the ancient stadium and acropolis fortifications, and numerous 18th- and 19th-century National Revival houses. Ancient Plovdiv has been on Bulgaria's UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 2004; it is not an inscribed World Heritage property. The district is an outdoor historic quarter, but individual museums, houses and archaeological venues may require separate tickets and keep different schedules; check each operator before visiting.
