Founded in the 10th century by St John of Rila, it developed into an important spiritual and cultural centre of medieval Bulgaria. The present monumental complex largely reflects rebuilding undertaken after a destructive fire in the early 19th century. The monastery is reachable year-round by the signed road from the E79 turnoff near Kocherinovo; official tourism guidance places it about 25 km from the junction, with parking outside both gates.
