Shumen Fortress

The fortress occupies the rocky Hisarlaka hill about 3 km west of modern Shumen and was naturally defended by steep slopes on three sides. Archaeology documents a fortified Thracian settlement here from the 5th to 2nd centuries BCE, followed by Roman, early Byzantine, and medieval occupation. During the 12th–14th centuries it developed into an important urban center of the Second Bulgarian Empire; its defenses included three outer walls and an inner citadel. The fortress was captured by Ottoman forces in 1388 and was finally destroyed during the 1444 fighting between its Ottoman garrison and the crusaders of Władysław III. This is an exposed hilltop archaeological complex with ruins and uneven outdoor terrain; suitable footwear is prudent, and accessibility should be confirmed directly if needed. The official museum publishes seasonal schedules, so current admission and hours should be checked before travel rather than assumed.
