Tsarevets was the principal fortified center of Tarnovo when the city served as capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1185 until the late 14th century. The hill contained the royal palace, patriarchal complex, churches, residences, workshops, and substantial defensive works. Archaeology documents occupation long before the medieval capital, including prehistoric, Thracian, and Early Byzantine phases. The present monument combines excavated remains with restored walls, gates, towers, and the reconstructed Patriarchal Church on the summit.
