About this road trip
The central Rhodopes reward slower travel. Begin in Chepelare, a working mountain town, then climb toward Pamporovo and the high forest below Snezhanka Peak. Rather than building the trip around a fixed lift schedule, use the resort as a gateway whose walks and views depend on season and weather. The second day focuses on Smolyan Lakes, where short forest paths connect remnants of a landslide-formed lake group. Mud, snow and ice can change even easy-looking paths. Finish in Shiroka Laka, whose stone roofs, bridges and music traditions create one of the region's strongest cultural landscapes. Its lanes are steep and uneven, so leave the car and explore patiently on foot. This circuit is intentionally spacious: it gives room for changing mountain conditions, a local museum, or an unhurried meal rather than forcing many distant attractions into each day. Recheck lifts, roads and trails before departure, particularly outside summer.
