UNESCO describes the complex as three connected buildings: a 10th-century eastern church, a two-storey extension commissioned by Sebastocrator Kaloyan in the 13th century, and an early-19th-century addition. Its celebrated second layer of wall paintings dates to 1259; other surviving mural layers date from the 11th, 15th–17th, and 19th centuries. Boyana Church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 under criteria (ii) and (iii).
