About this place

The Melnik Pyramids are protected in Bulgaria's official register as Natural Monument No. 318. The protected area covers 1,164.52 hectares in Sandanski Municipality around Melnik, Karlanovo, Rozhen, Sugarevo and Gorna Sushitsa. The monument was declared in 1960 to protect unique and characteristic landforms; erosion continues to shape pinnacles, ridges, pyramids and mushroom-like formations. The protected-area rules prohibit activities such as quarrying, mining, unauthorized construction and alteration of the landscape or water regime. Use established paths and do not climb fragile formations; some cliffs are sheer and inaccessible. Check the linked official sources shortly before visiting because access, opening times, tours and road conditions can change.
