About this road trip
Southwestern Bulgaria feels markedly different from Sofia: the climate softens, vineyards appear, and pale ridges rise around the tiny historic town of Melnik. On day one, pause in Sandanski's green centre before visiting Rupite beneath the volcanic hill of Kozhuh. The thermal water there is dangerously hot, so remain in designated visitor areas. Day two belongs to Melnik and the protected pyramids surrounding it. Walk the historic streets, visit a cellar only if a driver will not drink, and choose an established path into the fragile landscape. Rozhen Monastery makes a fitting final stop, with frescoes, carved wood and broad views toward the eroded hills. The footpath between Melnik and Rozhen is appealing but vulnerable to runoff and landslides; check it locally rather than assuming it is open. Historic buildings keep variable hours, and summer heat makes an early start especially valuable.
