The monastery probably originated in the early 17th century near Oreshak; the operator notes that a medieval foundation has not been proven. It received stauropegial status, placing it directly under the patriarchate, in 1830. The present Church of the Dormition was built in 1835 by master Konstantin from the village of Peshtera. Zahari Zograf painted the church in 1847, including unusual subjects and images of Bulgarian saints. The monastery stands by the Cherni Osam River near Oreshak, roughly 10 kilometres from Troyan; coordinates mark the monastery complex.
