The Troyan region works best as a relaxed two-day trip rather than a monastery dash from Sofia. Begin in Troyan itself, using the town centre and local museum context to understand a community shaped by the Balkan foothills, ceramics and plum-growing traditions. On day two, continue to Troyan Monastery, Bulgaria's important mountain monastery associated with the icon of the Three-Handed Virgin and frescoes by Zahari Zograf. Oreshak's arts and crafts exhibition complements the religious site with a practical view of regional making, from ceramics and woodwork to textiles. Both institutions are active places whose exhibitions, workshops and visiting arrangements change through the year. Religious feast days can bring crowds, while winter roads require more time.
