About this road trip

This five-day route treats the southern coast as a cultural and ecological landscape, not a sequence of resort stops. Burgas's Sea Garden provides an easy arrival day with mature planting, sculpture and open views along more than five kilometres of coast. Pomorie then takes two days because its Salt Museum and hypersaline lagoon explain the same landscape from different angles. The museum preserves traditional solar-evaporation beds and tools; the lake supports salt-tolerant species and migrating birds along Via Pontica. Stay on established routes, do not enter working pans or nesting areas, and never count on a particular wildlife sighting. Keep day four as a weather buffer or a slower return to Burgas. Finish in the Ancient City of Nessebar, where Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, medieval Bulgarian and nineteenth-century layers share a compact peninsula. The historic core is walked over cobbles and steps, individual church interiors follow separate schedules, and vehicle access is controlled. Confirm the monuments that matter most, then leave enough time simply to read the town's layered fabric.

Plan safely

  • Nessebar's cobbles, steps and vehicle restrictions may limit step-free access.
  • Prepare for sun, wind and limited shade around the salt landscape; carry water.
