About this road trip
The north coast is best experienced as a sequence of landscapes rather than a dash between beaches. Begin in Varna with the Roman Thermae, whose surviving rooms reveal the scale of ancient Odessos and provide a historical anchor before the coastal drive. Day two moves into the limestone at Aladzha Monastery, where medieval cells and chapel spaces occupy two levels of a high cliff. Confirm its seasonal operation because winter closure and access arrangements can change. Balchik deserves a full day: Queen Marie's Palace ensemble and Sofia University's Botanical Garden are adjacent but separately managed, so check both ticket offices and accessible routes instead of assuming one admission covers everything. Keep day four flexible for Varna, Balchik or weather. Cape Kaliakra should take the clearest, least windy window on day five. Its long headland combines archaeology, steppe habitat and cliffs roughly seventy metres above the sea. Stay behind barriers, do not promise wildlife sightings or unrestricted trail access, and treat every coordinate as a visitor-orientation pin rather than a parking endpoint.

- Aladzha includes stairs, uneven surfaces and confined spaces; verify accessibility.
